In 1978, a small group of employees from the Quaker State refinery in Farmer’s Valley Pennsylvania (right outside of Smethport, PA) decided to come together and lay the foundation for what would become known today as Petrowax Federal Credit Union.

 

Through our history, our main sponsor has changed names many times, but the spirit of customer service and savings has always remained a staple of our Credit Union. What began as Quaker State changed to Petrowax in 1990. After a short period of time they then changed hands to Astor, then to Allied Signal, followed by Honeywell, and are currently under the ownership of International Waxes.

 

In the beginning years of our Credit Union, a board member’s home served as the office and meeting location. Being a very small Credit Union, board members for years opened their doors to the Credit Union and allowed business to be run out of their homes. This was until we moved into our first office in uptown Smethport, above the Corner Restaurant. After a few years in that location, several board members reoffered their homes to the Credit Union. Two homes served as our place of operations for several years.

Later, we moved again to an office above the Producer’s Bank in Smethport (now Northwest Savings Bank), and soon after to the maintenance building at the Farmer’s Valley plant. Finally, we moved once more to our current location across the road from the Farmer’s Valley plant in the old Dairy Bar / Learning Center.

 

Though much has changed about our Credit Union, from our name to our office location, we are currently preparing for our 30^th year of operation and celebrating with over 360 members and nearly half a million dollars in assets.
